Town historyFirst inhabited in Roman times, in 740 AD a settlement called „Cella in Bisoncio“ was founded by monks of Archbishop Johannes. The town is one of the oldest Bavarian settlements in the Pinzgau. In 1358 Zell acquired the status of a market town. With the construction of the railway in 1875, the first tourists arrived. In 1928 Zell became a town.
Attractions
Parish church "St.Hippolyt": romanesque building from the 11th century. Main altar and side altar date back to the neo gothic era around the 1900s Schloss Rosenberg - Rathaus: built in 1583, with 4 corner towers and a centre tower.
Town fountain:with important historical events on the side panels.
Town hall: gothic house built before 1500. Since 1971 property of the Provinz Salzburg. In the entrance hall hang all the village emblems of the Pinzgau.
Vogtturm (Kastnerturm): oldest builing of the town, today home of the town museum
Österreich-Brunnen: the famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser devoted the fountain to the nine Austrian provinces by representing each with one pillar
Schloss Prielau: Pinzgau residence since 1425
Ferry Porsche Congress-Centre: newly built congress centre with modern architecture and contemporary technical equipment
Surroundings
The region Zell am See-Kaprun is ideal for Sport and leisure activities of every kind - Skiing in winter, water sport, golfing, riding, cycling, mountainbiking and rammbling in the summer. By foot or cable car up to the Schmittenhöhe; there the visitor is awaited by an unique view of 30 threethousand metre high summits. The glacier ski area Kitzsteinhorn is an attraction for winter sport fans all year round. The high altitude reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden, the castle Kaprun, Vötters automobile museum, the Sigmund-Thun-gorge and many more are excellent attractions.
