Originally, the Leningrad Cowboys were a fictional band, invented by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki for his film Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989). The ensemble he put together mainly from among the members of an existing band, since 1975 the existing, well-known in Finland Sleepy Sleepers who were close to the punk rock music. The geographical allocation of the band remains unclear in the film. For example with the name and the appearance of a "Siberian party functionary" with red markings, and by the presentation of Russian folk songs will be interpreted in a Russian music group. Despite all the talk "Russians" in the original Finnish film, as long as they are in their country of origin.
Following the international success of the film developed the film strip its own life, appeared as "Leningrad Cowboys" on, put out albums and videos shot. Aki Kaurismäki turned 1992 two music videos for the band, "Those Were the Days" and "Through The Wire" (again with Nicky Tesco). In the follow-up film Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses (1994) he left them again to take the lead role.
The Leningrad Cowboys play a mixture of cover versions of popular pop and rock songs and Russian folk songs. Some original compositions dealing thematically with stereotypes of the Soviet Union.
The instrumentation is also a mix of traditional rock instruments such as drums, guitar and electric bass as well as traditional musical instruments such as accordion, tuba, trumpet, clarinet, violin and ukulele. Many band members play multiple instruments, so that various combinations are used. The arrangements are aware of stubborn, the band plays with different styles and tempos, it is often targeted against the traditional way of playing the pieces. Alone in the film along with other very different styles of polka, rock and roll, country and mariachi are mixed. Often, the genres are being caricatured here, pressing the Leningrad Cowboys is as much musical parodist. This also correspond to the film and stage appearances: Some are musicians there stoically, without making the slightest attempt, sometimes silly, and they bounce around wildly.
Also a mixture of homage and parody was the commitment of two go-go dancers who supplemented later under the name "Baikonur girls' performances. Her clothes and hair style should remember the Soviet fashion of the 1960s.
Sensation was caused by the cooperation of the Leningrad Cowboys with the Chorus and Dance Ensemble of the Soviet army, which they interpreted a number of rock classics such as Stairway to Heaven, and Yellow Submarine. Of the common open-air concert Total Balalaika Show in front of 70,000 spectators at the Senate Square in Helsinki on 12 June 1993 turned Aki Kaurismäki, in a reversal of the initial conditions now documentary of the band, a 54-minute film. Originally designed for the performance show has been associated with the financial support of Finnish companies even on tour.
