„ Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.“

John Ruskin (British writer and painter)

Bad Goisern, lying on a wide valley floor at 500 meters above sea level, borders in the southern area on the fjord-like, fantastically situated Lake Hallstatt. The scattered 30 districts that make up the spa town are ideal starting points for snowshoe hikers, cross-country skiers and horse-drawn sleigh tours in the midst of a multitude of trails in winter. But there is even more to do around the winter sports resort: at the foot of the Predigtstuhl there is a high-altitude cross-country skiing center in a panoramic location. Austrian curling also has a tradition here. From Bad Goisern, the view sweeps across Lake Hallstatt to the 2,108 meter high Krippenstein, which is part of the Dachstein massif. This popular vantage point is accessed by a cable car; step into the high mountains and look forward to wonderful snowshoe and winter hikes. As an example of a natural landscape of unique beauty, the alpine region of Hallstatt-Dachstein, like Hallstatt on the lake of the same name, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Salzkammergut thermal baths in Bad Ischl offer relaxation, as does your accommodation, the ***Hotel Goiserer Hof with sauna and herbal steam sauna.

Program proposal

Day 1: Individual arrival in the climatic health resort of Bad Goisern

Arrival in sun-drenched Bad Goisern. The pretty spa town with its outstanding geographical location on Lake Hallstatt attracts sports and mountain enthusiasts in both summer and winter. Depending on the time of arrival, a leisurely winter hike along the Traun on the Traunreiterweg to the district of Weißenbach is worthwhile to 'warm up'. From the Goiserer bridge you will be accompanied by the tireless rushing of the Traun to the Weißenbach bridge. This easy path has been one of the most popular running and walking paths for many years.

You will receive your travel documents at the hotel in Bad Goisern. (5 nights)

Hiking: approx. 1 1/4 hours round trip (3 km, without significant ascents and descents)

Day 2: Dachstein High plateau on the Krippenstein

The free ski bus takes you to Obertraun to the valley station of the Krippenstein cable car; there you will receive your personal snowshoe equipment. The cable car takes you to the Schönbergalm (middle station) and further over steep rock faces to the Hohen Krippenstein at a height of 2,108 meters. Located on the northern edge of the Dachstein massif, this limestone massif offers an overwhelming view of the broad karst plateau of the Dachstein.

Three marked and groomed snowshoe trails and winter hiking trails are ideal for exploring the plateau:

Variant 1 (simple)
World heritage spiral with a 360° panoramic view
The best way to enjoy the panorama is from the World Heritage Spiral, a snail-shaped viewing ramp that adorns the flat Krippenstein summit. You can also look down to Hallstatt from here.
Hiking: approx. 3/4 hour round trip (0,5 km, 32 Altitude meters in ascent and descent)

Variant 2 (simple)
5fingers observation deck
This viewing platform is no less exciting. A steel construction towers like a hand eight meters over a 350 meter deep abyss and offers breathtaking views of Lake Hallstatt.
Hiking: approx. 1 hour round trip (1 km, 120 Altitude meters in ascent and descent)

Variant 3 (simple - medium)
Dachstein Shark
The king of the primeval sea is back! The 'Dachstein Shark' on the Heilbronn circular hiking trail gives visitors a glimpse into the prehistoric past of the Dachstein massif, which was covered with seawater millions of years ago. Prehistoric sharks probably also lived here. Visitors can climb the fish's belly and see the Dachstein Glacier from its mouth.
Hiking: approx. 1,5 hours round trip (3,4 km, 220 Altitude meters in ascent and descent)

Day 3: Predigtstuhl

In the morning, drive up the six-kilometer-long toll-free panoramic road in the direction of Predigtstuhl.

Variant 1
Cross-country skiing at the high-altitude cross-country ski trail center at the Predigstuhl in Bad Goisern
From the high-altitude trail at 1,000 meters there is a splendid view of the Salzkammergut World Heritage Site with the Dachstein Glacier and Lake Hallstatt. A total of 27 kilometers of moderately easy to very demanding trails are available. Interesting delicacies are the "World Cup Trail" - especially for experts in the sport - and an imposing suspension bridge, which serves as a connection between two trails.

Variant 2 (medium)
Snowshoe hiking to the Hütteneck alpine hut
Nature lovers will get their money's worth on the extensive snowshoe hike, which starts at the parking lot at 973 meters and leads over the Rossmoosalm to the Hütteneckalm (1,240 meters). Far away from the hustle and bustle, you can enjoy the quiet side of winter during a hike in the snow-covered mountain forest and pasture area. From the cozy alpine inn you have a fantastic view of the Dachstein. In the immediate vicinity there is also a wooden viewing pavilion, a replica that was once built for Empress Sisi.
Hiking: approx. 3 hours round trip (5,3 km, 305 Altitude meters in ascent and descent)

Day 4: A day to enjoy

In the morning, the cross-country ski trail attracts riders in St. Agatha. This sunny, easy-to-manage long trail runs through four villages of Bad Goisern. It is mostly flat with no significant climbs or descents. Enjoy the view of the more than 2,000 meter high Krippenstein and the snow-covered, romantic Church of St. Agatha from the 15th/16th centuries. It received a late Baroque high altar around 1715 - an artificial Mount Golgotha with a crucifixion scene rich in figures.

A free thermal bus takes you to the Salzkammergut thermal baths in Bad Ischl in the afternoon.

Hiking: approx. 5 kilometers round trip

Day 5: Gosau

The elongated, idyllically located high valley stretches from Lake Hallstatt to the west side of the Dachstein, where it finds its magnificent conclusion with the rock needles of the wildly rugged Gosaukamm. The wide, very sunny mountain valley stretches along this alpine panorama, past snow-covered treetops and peaks, at an average height of 780 meters and usually with a high level of snow reliability. The free ski bus takes you comfortably to Gosau and back to Bad Goisern.

Variant 1 (simple – medium)
Snowshoeing on the Zwieselalm
On the Gosauer Zwieselalm there is a snowshoe trail for all guests. The Dachstein Glacier is within reach. Ascent with the 8-seater panorama jet and then you will find the signposted trail starting directly at the mountain station. Extra costs to be paid on the spot.
Hiking: approx. 1,5 hours round trip (2,2 km, 240 Altitude meters in ascent and descent)

Variant 2 (simple)
Cross-country skiing on the Sonnenloipe
One of the easier tours is the 5 km long sun trail: Start and finish are at the sports center and initially lead to the right of the romantic Gosaucreek. You glide gently past snow-covered treetops and peaks, right into the dreamy Alpine panorama: pure moments of happiness!
Cross-Country skiing: approx. 4,1 km, 45 Altitude meters in ascent and descent

Variant 3 (medium)
Cross-country skiing on the village trail
At 15 kilometers long, the village trail is the longest tour in the Gosau Valley. It is directly connected to other trails in the Gosau Valley and starts at the sports center. The breathtaking alpine panorama of Gosau Valley and Gosaukamm makes this tour an unforgettable nature experience.
Cross-Country skiing: approx. 13,4 km, 120 Altitude meters in ascent and descent

Day 6: Individual departure or visit to Hallstatt

If you have the opportunity to extend your stay in the exciting high mountain scenery of the Inner Salzkammergut, the repertoire of discoveries is far from exhausted and additional nights can be booked.

For example, a circular hike through Hallstatt with its romantic alleys, archaeological excavations and the cultural heritage museum is a good idea. Also visit the picturesque market square with the baroque Trinity Column, the evangelical Christ Church and the "covered staircase" to the Catholic Church Maria-Hilf.

If your time does not allow an extension of your stay, you will depart in the morning.

All tour suggestions are designed in such a way that no guide is necessary. You can book an experienced mountain guide with us at any time. We recommend finding out about the current avalanche situation before each tour. The suggestions listed are just an excerpt from all the winter activities around Bad Goisern.
