Snow Shoe Hiking Tour Salzkammergut

2nd January until 7th April 2012

The glittery white landscape, the noise of the snow crunching beneath the shoes, lakes steaming in the cold and the warm sunbeams are what make the winter in the Salzkammergut something very special: a winter wonderland with unforgettable moments.

Target group with professional tour guide:
- Good physical stamina is precondition
- Experience in local terrain not necessary
- Snow-Shoe-Beginners possible
- Singles and families
- Persons who are interested not only in nature and snow-shoe hiking but also in culture, people, history and traditions.

Recommended equipment:
- 3 sets underwear
- Windbreaker, 2-3 layers outer clothing
- Cap and gloves
- Snow and ski glasses, sun cream, headlamp, candle, bivy sack (1 bivy sack/3 persons)

Planning of the day:
Daily hiking times were calculated with following average times:
Per hour 2,8 kilometers + another hour for 200 meters in altitude

The tour is liable to weather conditions and avalanche risk!
We recommend to book an experienced alpine guide.

Program of the Snow Shoe Tour:
1st day: Individual arrival in Salzburg. Transfer from the main train station to the hotel in Hintersee. You are welcomed with schnapps. In the evening your snow-shoe guide welcomes you in hotel – general introduction of participants, discussion of tour and rules will be explained.

Overnight stay in Hintersee.

2nd day: Tour – Hintersee to Abersee
Start at 7.00 am / Arrival at 4.00 pm – pure walking time approx. 7 hour with short breaks
Hiking tour from Hintersee to Königsbergalm, approx. 6 km, 440 meters in altitude, 3,5 hours
Continue from Königsbergalm to Zwölferhorn, approx. 7 km, 300 meters in altitude, 3 hours,
Descent into valley to St. Gilgen, approx. 4 km, 1,5 hours (own food and drinks has to be brought along).

Alternatives:
- Descent with cable car to St. Gilgen (extra to pay on spot)
- if there is bad weather, then descent from Königsbergalm via Breitenbert to Abersee, approx. 10 and 3,5 hours

Overnight stay in Abersee / surroundings Wolfgangsee.


3rd day: Tour – Postalm Arena
Up to the Postalm by bus.
There is no set route for snow shoe rambling. Everything is possible – cross country or simply following the sun.

9:00 am departure to Postalm. Possibility to make an individual hiking tour or guided tour to Wiesler Horn (10 km, 300 meters in altitude, approx. 5 hours), descent via hut Wiesler, possibility to stop.

Overnight stay on the Postalm.

4th day: Tour – Postalm to Russbach
Start at 10.00 am, Arrival at 4 pm
From Postalm to Rinnbergalm, 7 km, approx. 2,5 hours and further from Rinnbergalm to Russbach,
5km, approx. 2 hours (in whole approx. 400 meters descent)

Overnight stay in Russbach.

5th day: Tour – Russbach to Gosau
Today the tour leads you through the popular ski area Dachstein West.
Start in Russbach, hike to Pass-Gschütt and via Kalvarianberg to Gosau, approx. 9 km, 200 meters in altitude, 4 hours.

Overnight stay in Gosau.

6th Day: Tour – Gosau to Hallstatt
From Gosau via Rossalm to Hallstatt. Along forest road to Rossalmgraben approx. 6 km, 650 meters in altitude, approx. 4,5 hours. Descent from Rossalm via Echerntal, approx. 10 km, 3,5 hours.
In whole approx. 8 hours walking time (long day tour, possible to go according to mood and condition, alternatives possible, own food and drinks has to be brought along).

Overnight stay in Hallstatt.

Alternative: Tour – Gosau – Zwieselalm – lakes Gosau
Hike in ski area – Gosau via Zwieselam to hut Gablonzer Hütte and with cable car descent to lake Gosausee. Hike to Zwieselalm, approx 6 km, 2,5 hours and further to Gablonzer Hütte approx. 1,5 km, ½ hour; in whole approx. 3 – 3,5 hours
Descent with cable card and bus to Hallstatt (extra to pay on spot).

At lakes Gosauseen there is the possibility to walk with snow shoes round the lake Gosausee or you can relax in the restaurant at the sun terrace directly at the lake.

Last descent with cable car from Zwieselam at 4 pm and last bus from Gosausee to Hallstatt at 5pm.

If you decide for alternative also overnight in Hallstatt.

7th day: Departure
Transfer from Hallstatt to Salzburg to the main train station and individual departure.
