Villach to Trieste

he Ciclovia Alpe-Adria cycle path is an unforgettable experience. The cross-border cycle path, which is 410 kilometres long in total, leads from Salzburg across the Alps to the Italian Adriatic Sea. On this section you cross the border to Italy from Carinthia and cycle partly on old railway lines through the untouched Friulian Alps, via Udine and the cultural town of Aquilea to the sea, to the famous seaside resort of Grado and the port city of Trieste, at the far end of the Gulf of Venice.

 

General information:

This tour is a 260 - 285 km long cycle track of easy to medium difficulty. Physical fitness and the will to persevere are therefore a prerequisite. Also the right bike equipment such as closed sneakers, backpack, sun and rain protection, functional clothing, jacket and sweater, etc. are the basis of every bike tour.

2nd day: Villach – Travis/Camporosso, ca. 37- 40 km

Following the river Gail you leave Villach behind you and soon you say goodbye to Austria and welcome Italy. In the border triangle Italy-Austria-Slovenia, the „Kanaltal” extends, with the Italian border town of Tarvisio at its centre.

3rd day: Travis/Camporosso – Moggio Udinese/Venzone, ~ 50 - 60 km

Through the canal, the “Canale del Ferro”, you can admire the beauty of the Friulian Alps with an intact, untouched nature and vast forests. Discover Venzone with its varied history, best on a stroll through the old town.

4th day: Moggio Udinese/Venzone – Udine, ~ 50 - 60 km

The wine determines today's stage. Hills full of vines line your path and invite you to taste one or the other drop. With a coffee in the "Piazza" or while strolling through the city centre, you can admire important buildings from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.

5th day: Udine - Grado, ~ 55 - 60 km

Accompanied by the breeze of the Scirocco, you glide past reed landscapes and water canals and cross the former Roman city of Aquileia to the historic fishing town of Grado, one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic.

6th day: Day of rest at the seaside or day of culture in Aquileia

Today you can choose between a day of sightseeing in the footsteps of the Romans in Aquileia, the “Second Rome”, or a relaxing day by the sea, which you can enjoy in a deck chair on the kilometre-long beach of the lagoon.

7th day: Grado – Trieste, ~ 65 km

Following a breathtakingly beautiful coastal area, you will cycle towards your destination, the former Habsburg city of Trieste. Miramare Castle invites you to visit before you enter the old harbour and trading city. Trieste offers a worthy conclusion to this cycling trip.

8th day: Individual departure or transfer back to Villach
